Name: Plywood Laboratory // Location: Hokkaido, Japan // Focus: Paper-wood Accessories

WHAT IS Plywood Laboratory?

An offshoot of a manufacturer Takizawa Plywood – Plywood Laboratory uses paper-wood plywood (a blend of colored paper and local wood from Hokkaido) to create pieces that aren’t available anywhere else in the world.

WHAT DO THEY MAKE?

They make some furniture, but one of their focuses is on accessories and play objects. Their animal puzzle range shows off the versatility of plywood and how it can be used for more than just everyday chairs and tables.

OUR FAVORITE PIECE

Koishi (小石) – Japanese for ‘pebble’ – is a lovely example of precision cutting and sanding techniques to create a small design piece that looks fantastic. The way the cross grains made from colored paper-wood run across the paperweight is mesmerizing.
