MOWO – Showing What Bent Plywood Furniture Can Do

MOWO are an Austrian based plywood studio that have become well known in the furniture scene for their use of bent plywood. The Achter Hocker is a fantastic example of how plywood can be molded to create something truly unique yet functional.

“For our curvy seats we use molded plywood. In this technique layers (plies) of thin veneer (mostly 1-1.5mm) are cross layered, meaning the grain direction changes between every layer. A thin layer of glue is applied between the veneers. This stack is then placed into a press tool. Under high pressure the veneers are molded into shape. High frequency during the pressing accelerates the curing process of the glue and the shapes are ready to be taken out after a few minutes only. Because of the high curvature of our stool shapes they are placed on molds to cool-down to avoid any deformations after pressing.”

Maintenance and Care

Regular Cleaning

  • Dusting: Use a soft, dry cloth or a feather duster to gently remove dust and debris from the surface of the furniture. Regular dusting prevents buildup, which can lead to scratches and dullness over time.
  • Spot Cleaning: For spills or stains, immediately blot the affected area with a clean, damp cloth. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the finish of the plywood. Instead, use mild soap and water for stubborn stains, followed by a gentle drying with a clean cloth.
  • Avoid Moisture: Bent plywood is susceptible to warping and damage from excessive moisture. Ensure the furniture is kept away from direct sunlight, high humidity areas, and sources of moisture such as open windows or leaky pipes. Use coasters or placemats to protect the surface from condensation or spills.

Preventive Maintenance

  • Inspect Regularly: Periodically inspect the furniture for any signs of wear, such as loose joints, cracks, or scratches. Addressing minor issues quickly can prevent them from escalating into more significant problems.
  • Tighten Joints: If you notice any loose joints or screws, tighten them immediately to maintain the structural integrity of the furniture. Use a screwdriver or an appropriate tool to secure any loose hardware.
  • Reapply Finish: Over time, the finish on bent plywood furniture may wear off or become dull. To revive the appearance and protect the wood, consider reapplying a suitable finish, such as varnish or wood oil, following the manufacturer’s recommendations.#
